Crescent Beach
Crescent Beach first became accessible to the public in 1909 with the development of the Great Northern Railway. Several years later, permanent dikes were built to prevent flooding, and allow homes to be safely built near the water. Today these dikes are still standing, and they form the scenic pathway that runs along the bay. Crescent Beach used to have its own train station to accommodate the hundreds of tourists that would vacation here during the summer, but it is no longer in operation.
Bird watching enthusiasts enjoy taking in the beautiful views and observing the wildlife at Blackie Spit Park. This stunning city park is located on a peninsula that extends into Mud Bay at the mouth of the Nicomekl River. About 200 different species of birds can be found here throughout the year as they migrate up and down the West Coast. In addition to birds, harbour seals and their pups can often be spotted around the sandbars. Of course, nothing beats enjoying the great outdoors with your favorite four legged friend. Blackie Spit has two leash-free dog parks, one of which is located directly on the beach.
